Madjitil Moorna

I belong to an all-ages community choir, originally led by award-winning indigenous musicians Jessie Lloyd and Della Rae Morrison and, in 2009 for the first time, George Walley. We meet in the Perth foothills to sing Indigenous music and have a CD and a Songbook + CD available, all proceeds go towards reconcilliation and healing work. Jan Owen

About Madjitil Moorna: Since the Zig Zag Festival 2006 the choir has been singing Aboriginal songs, both traditional in language and soulful contemporary songs. Since their first performance in 2006 the group has been winning over audiences who are delighted to see Aboriginal people and Wetjellas all singing together in language and having a great time.

While many of the singers feel this choir gives them a chance to do something wonderful for themselves they believe that by singing they can contribute to positive change for Indigenous people and for our society as a whole. One Aboriginal member, Pat Oakley wrote, '....the choir has the ability to move so many people and spread the message of reconciliation far more effectively than any other method.'

All voices are welcome in this choir. There are no auditions. We sing in 3 parts and new people find the place most comfortable for their voice. When they feel ready, new people perform - sometimes with words sheets, though we prefer to sing hands and eyes free!

Special gigs have included festivals, community celebrations, NAIDOC events, Sorry Days, Reconciliation events and school assemblies. Madjitil Moorna was honoured to be invited to sing Sorry Song at the Perth Esplanade immediately after the Prime Minister's Apology to the Stolen Generations 13 February 2008. See track 10.

In May 2009, the group spent a week in Halls Creek, doing workshops with the kids and preparing for a big community concert. It was a huge success with hundreds of families enjoying their kids and favourite local musicians up on stage. Madjitil Moorna is keen to go again next year and once again perform in the Barramundi Concert with Halls Creek kids, in Kununurra.

The door is always open to new people.

A 'good voice' is not essential. Add yours to the blend!

We meet Mondays 6.30 cuppa  7.00 - 8.30pm to sing.

We meet in Forrestfield but also by invitation,

in other community centers.
