Confidence, Overwhelm and Homoeopathy

A certain degree of anxiety is normal when we are faced with new and threatening experiences. However sometimes we are unable to cope with this anxiety and become debilitated by it and unable to function. In difficult and complex situations a constitutional prescription or professional opinion is needed to attain balance. However for acute problems that arise there is much we can do with home prescribing.

Aconite:  For acute anxiety, panic, agitation and restlessness, which may come on suddenly before an event like exams, giving a presentation or any other nerve wracking situation.

Argent nit:  Nervous due to worry and low confidence about coming events, especially appearing before an audience. Apprehension and anticipatory anxiety with trepidation, great hurry, incessant speech, suggestibility and impulsiveness along with a multitude of ‘what if’ thoughts. Craves sweets and suffers much wind and diarrhoea from anticipation.

Arsenicum: Restless anxiety, apprehension and dread in high achievers who may become overly fussy and fastidious when stressed. Their sleep becomes affected and they tend to wake between 12 and 2am with tummy upsets or asthma and extreme mental and physical restless anxiety.

Baryta carb: Shy and lacking in confidence especially in social situations. They can be very fearful of strangers, indecisive and quite cowardly. Easily embarrassed and feel they are being laughed at. Emotionally immature or developmentally delayed for their age.

Calc carb: There is a fear of change and losing control, for these people stability and routine makes them feel secure. They can seem very stubborn or obstinate especially if things are changing too quickly for them. There can be many fears one of which is that people will notice their confusion, they feel very self-conscious, inferior and vulnerable.

Gelsemium: A great remedy for shyness and anticipatory anxiety; when people don’t have the confidence that they can cope and anticipate even simple things with fear and dread. They become very weary, apathetic, withdrawn, preoccupied and can’t think from the stress of anticipating an event, excitement or from receiving bad news. May suffer from headaches with drowsiness, trembling, weakness, heavy droopy eyes, frequent, painless diarrhoea, flu symptoms and restless fitful sleep.

Kali phos:  Mental and physical overwhelm or despair from excitement, overwork or worry. Headache, weakness and exhaustion in students worn out by fatigue. This is an excellent nerve tonic to use along with other indicated remedies during times of change and stress such as exams and performance. Include other remedies as indicated.

Lycopodium:  Low self esteem with a lack of courage and confidence that can be covered up by bravado or over talking. Terrified of public speaking but does well once started. They suffer many fears and dread responsibility, commitment and taking on new things, though they work hard and do well in spite of their nerves. Irritable, tension stemming from insecurity, overwhelm, apprehension and a fear of failure. They are usually compliant at school or in challenging situations but may be bossy, irritable and sarcastic at home where they feel secure and confident. Headaches from low blood sugar as a result of not eating, digestive uneasiness including ‘butterflies’ in stomach, diarrhoea or very loose stools, lots of wind. Like Argent nit they crave sweets and suffer wind and digestive problems from anxiety.

Nat mur:  Sensitive, serious, intensely private people who appear prickly because they are not good at expressing their emotions. They can worry about upsetting people unintentionally by saying the wrong thing and also can take things the wrong way with a tendency to dwell on old hurts. This can make them very self conscious and lacking in confidence in social situations.

Pulsatilla:  Shy, timid and full of self-doubt and insecurity. They constantly need support, affection and attention. Dependency and separation anxiety in clingy, weepy children who find it hard to deal with change and step into independence.

Silica:  These people lack grit and self-confidence and are delicate, emotionally sensitive and serious. They will usually give way if pushed, but will quietly do what they wanted to do anyway. Anxious and afraid before exams, or to try anything new, because they are convinced that they will fail. Shy around strangers and very attached to home. Conscientious and tidy. They find it hard to fix their attention.
