Homoeopathy and The Croupy Cough

posted in: Croupy Cough | 0

The croupy cough is distinctive and reminds you of a sea seal barking. There can also be raspy breathing and a hoarse voice due to inflammation of the larynx, trachea and air passages. Croup is common in young children around autumn during the change of season and can be caused by exposure to chill air or by a virus.

For mild to moderate croup homoeopathy along with home care methods such as breathing in warm shower steam and sipping plenty of warm fluids is usually effective. Severe croup can be terrifying and may need urgent medical care if your child is struggling to breathe despite your efforts.

There is a trio of homoeopathic remedies that help most children but for some a more individual remedy may be needed. If symptoms recur consider a homoeopathic consult to select a deeper acting remedy.

The trio consists of Aconite, Spongia and Hepar sulph usually used in that order. Aconite suits the early stage of the inflammatory process and symptoms come on around 11pm and are associated with sudden onset and acute anxiety. Often the child has been exposed to a chill wind or there has been a rapid change in weather during the day and then suddenly wakes during the night gasping for breath. If unresolved the Aconite phase is followed, usually between 11pm and midnight, by a change in the cough to a dry, raspy cough like a sea seal barking indicating Spongia. The breathing is harsh; sawing and hard. After this stage the cough starts to sound loose, rattling and noisy with much mucous, this suits Hepar sulph. It may be necessary to rotate these remedies over the coming day or so to ensure that the croup is resolved.

Also consider Belladonna, Bromium, Drosera, Kali bic, Rumex especially if the causation and timing of symptoms differs from the above.
