Homoeopathy has a tradition of offering remedies to assist with symptoms associated with reflux and colic.

The following information may be helpful and relates to homoeopathic remedy pictures and information available in traditional homoeopathic texts. Homoeopathic principles should be applied when using any homoeopathic remedy. Always read the product label. If symptoms persist consult your health care practitioner promptly.

In her book Homoeopathic Remedies, Asa Herschoff says, ‘intestinal fermentation and an immature digestive system and pancreas in infants can result in painful gas, cramps, and upset bowels, while sensitivity to milk formula and toxins in breast milk are also common’.

Add to that the job of processing the drugs and immunisations inflicted upon the undeveloped system during the birth or soon after and it is little wonder the gut responds with pain and discomfort.

Intense emotional feelings can also upset babies and need to be considered when choosing a remedy. The following remedies may be helpful however if the situation is difficult to resolve consult your health care practitioner promptly.

COLIC:  There are two groups.  Those who draw their knees up: sharp, cutting pains, writhes and twists – Colocynthis.  Severe unbearable pain and abdominal swelling with typical irritability – Chamomilla.  Sharp cramping pains, tired and exhausted – Mag Phos.

Those who arch backwards: pains radiate from abdomen, worse from pressure – Dioscorea.

Colic with foul Diarrhoea and nausea – Ipecac.  Severe bloating and pressure – Nux Vomica.

Distended hot abdomen, hot and restless – Belladonna.  If the mother is suffering from grief or disappointment then give Ignatia.

The five remedy Colic Kit contains Belladonna, Chamomilla, Colocynthis, Nux Vomica and Tissue Salts for digestive function.

REFUSING MILK OR VOMITTING: Poor quality milk – Calc Carb.  Downwards movements during nursing that cause the baby to scream – Borax.  If the baby is thin with a large sweaty head, and vomiting after feeds – Silica.

REFLUX: with or without vomiting consider Aethusa, Nux Vomica or Phosphorus and Calc Phos may be indicated for refusal of or milk intolerance.  Emotional cause, grief or disappointment – Ignatia.
