Many people don’t realise that simple lifestyle changes such as weight management, avoiding trigger foods, reducing meal size and sugar intake all help reduce the incidence and symptoms of reflux. There are several remedies to consider for uncomplicated heartburn and painful acid reflux symptoms.
Nux vomica is one of the main remedies for indigestion and acid reflux especially if it makes them irritable and cranky. There can be all types of stomach pains; burning, bloating, aching, constipation, nausea, belching and the feeling of stomach contents and acid backing up into the throat. They tend to ‘over do’; working, eating and drinking to excess, loving coffee, spicy food, fatty foods and stimulants.
Arsenicum: Acid reflux disease with burning pains felt in the stomach and all the way up to the throat with food backing up into the esophagus. Despite the burning pains they are better from hot applications, like a heat pad or hot water bottle. Thirsty for small, frequent sips of room temperature water or for hot drinks like tea, which make them feel better. Anxious, restless and fearful of being left alone.
Phosphorus: Bloating, a feeling of fullness and burning pains like Arsenicum however they crave and feel better from icy cold drinks. There can be belching and vomiting of undigested food. Mild mannered people who like company and affection.
Pulsatilla: A sensation of a hole being burned in their stomach accompanied by flatulence. They can feel over-stuffed after eating and want to loosen their clothing for relief. Their personality is sweet, gentle, whiny and tearful and they love company and sympathy. Crave ice cream, fatty foods, and pastries, which make them feel worse, and aggravate the reflux.
Carbo veg: Heartburn with belching, bloating, heaviness in the stomach and chest and distress from eating simple, plain foods. There may be an aversion to foods like meats, milk and fats. There is a great desire for fresh air or for being fanned during attacks. There may be temporary relief during belching.
