Nowadays with so many male dogs and almost all male cats having been sterilised, there are few purely male conditions to treat!

It is near impossible to put up with a pet male cat who is not sterilised, as they are often smelly due to urine marking and can be aloof to humans, caring only about other cats and not humans. Unsterilised cats tend to live short lives as it is not possible to find a mate as most other cats are sterilised; so it is quite a stressful existence.

However quite a few male pet dogs are not sterilised. The most common male condition they may get generally occurs in later life which is enlarged prostate or even prostate cancer.

These conditions are testosterone dependant, so they usually resolve with sterilisation.

They may respond to homoeopathic treatment such as Pulsatilla for a dog who has become clingy and dependant, and feels the heat more than the cold. Saw palmetto in low potency or in herbal form can be beneficial, and food therapy can include pumpkin seeds and tahini (sesame seed paste) for zinc, vitamin E and omega fatty acids.

I must admit I don’t find myself treating many male only conditions these days!

So this is an excerpt from the book “The Homoeopathic Treatment of Small Animals” by Dr Christopher Day.

‘The most frequent problem met in the veterinary surgery related to the male system is that of Hypersexuality. The young dog especially about the age of 1 1/2 to 2 years old may become vagrant, peevish, over-boisterous, slightly unreliable and urinates territorially. This problem can lead to prostate problems, cystitis, paraphimosis, injury from jumping fences and car accidents. The dog becomes anti-social and can suffer injury by the hand of offended owners of other dogs or property. Consider the remedies Gelsemium, Lycopodium, Phosphorus, Tarantula and Zincum.

Weakness can occur as a result of these problems, consider Conium or Picric acid. Pulsatilla or Sepia can also be valuable. Problems in the older male dog consider for Prostatic problems Agnus, Conium, Pulsatilla, Sabal serr or Selenium. Difficulty passing stool – Nux vomica or Thuja. Difficulty passing urine – Merc cor, Cantharis. In underweight, young dogs with slow urine stream – Baryta carb.

Castrated animals may have their own set of problems and can be slow to respond to treatment, perseverance is encouraged. Male dogs may have bilateral hair loss on the sides of the body and prone to overweight. Cats may be prone to ‘miliary eczema’. Constitutional treatment is recommended however Testosterone can help and Pulex – potentised flea.’
