Preparing for Surgery
Having a positive attitude can be a great advantage in preparation for surgery, however often our nerves overcome us. Homoeopathic medicines can really help with anticipatory anxiety. Gelsemium is the first remedy to think of and should be taken 2-3 times the day prior to surgery. Aconite, Argent Nit, Chamomila and Coffea are other remedies to think about.
To prepare the body for surgery it an excellent idea to take Arnica 4 hourly on the day before surgery and a dose on the morning of surgery. If the surgery is to be long or complicated use the remedy more often.
Surgery Kit 1 (Bony): This kit isfor surgery involving bony parts of the body; starting with the anxiety before the procedure, right through until the mind and body have fully recovered.
Gelsemium: Anticipatory anxiety; usually feeling dull and withdrawn. Gelsemium should be taken 2-3 times the day prior to surgery.
Pyrogen: Can be taken on the day prior to surgery and continued daily for 7 days. Suppurating wounds after surgery; prevents infection.
Arnica, Hyperica, Emergency drops: Bruising and bleeding; promotes repair of nerve tissue, wound healing, and alleviation of stress or trauma.
Ruta Grav: Operations involving cartilage/periosteum, or where bone is close to surface. Deep bruises with stiff feeling.
Staphysagria: Incised wounds from surgery; difficult healing with redness and sensitivity of wounds.
Surgery Kit 2 (Soft Tissue):This kit is for surgery involving the soft tissue parts of the body.
Gelsemium: For anticipatory fears and anxiety.
Pyrogen: Suppurating wounds after surgery. Acts as a preventative against infection.. Take daily starting before the procedure and continuing for several days.
Arnica, Hyperica , Emergency drops: For bruising and bleeding; promotes repairof nerve tissue, wound healing, and alleviation of stress/trauma from the operation.
Bellis Perennis: After injury to deep soft tissues where pain remains despite the use of Arnica.
Staphysagria: Incised wounds after surgery; difficult healing with redness and sensitivity of wounds.
Anaesthetic After-effects:
Local Anaesthetic: Ruta Grav is the bone feels injured by the needle. Shooting pains- Hypericum. Swelling and burning stinging pains – Apis, Stiffness and coldness at the puncture site – Ledum.
General Anaesthetic: The most useful remedy for those prone to adverse effects after a general anaesthetic is Phosphorus – 3-4 doses prior to or even after the anaesthetic, can be very helpful.
Drug reactions and toxicity from medications are best treated with Nux Vomica, Arsenicum and Sulphur. Use Nitric Acid when antibiotics produce diarrhoea.
